Jaguar’s withdrawal from factory-backed motorsports in 1956 meant it’d a couple of D-Types left idle, along with a load of surplus parts.
An agenda was thus hatched to transform individuals D-Types into road-cars by fitting windscreens, doorways, hoods and luggage racks, but departing the mechanicals largely alone. A run of 25 cars was the goal, but nine (destined for that US) were destroyed inside a fire at Jaguar’s Browns Lane factory, meaning just 16 were offered in most.
Captured Jag announced intends to build individuals nine lost XKSSs, which is one. Kind-of. Revealed at the moment in the Petersen Museum in LA, it’s the job of Jaguar Classic – exactly the same team that in 2014 gave us the six missing Lightweight E-Types.
Caused by 18 several weeks of research (that incorporated the studying of original sketches, and also the checking of countless originals to make a complete digital picture), that one-off “Sherwood Green” vehicle is effectively a “blueprint that the nine continuation cars is going to be built”.
All nine is going to be new cars, but use period chassis figures – presumably in the cars lost within the fire. The physiques is going to be hands-wheeled from magnesium alloy, and also the cars will feature period Dunlop disc brakes, Dunlop tyres and 2-piece riveted magnesium alloy wheels.
The engine would be the 3.4-litre D-Type straight-six, which will work for 262bhp. Jag has added new surefire blocks, new cylinder-heads and Weber DC03 carbs.
Inside you will find “perfect recreations” from the original XKSS’s Smith’s gauges – and Jag states “everything in the wood from the controls, towards the grain from the leather seats, right through to the brass knobs around the XKSS dashboard, is strictly because it could have been in 1957”. Good.
Jag states the only real specs changes towards the XKSS happen to be designed to “improve driver and passenger safety”. The gas tank, for instance, is made from more powerful stuff compared to original’s was. It’s believed 10,000 man-hrs will enter in the build of every vehicle, making the ￡1million selling price appear slightly less crazy. Oh, and all sorts of happen to be offered already – clearly.
