Skoda’s Chief executive officer Bernhard Maier has eliminated any chance of Skoda resurrecting VW’s cancelled 2017 WRC programme. He told Top Gear he would rather keep Skoda’s sources centered on its effective Fabia WRC2 customer rallying project.
TG sprang the WRC question to Maier within the wake of VW’s exit from WRC. It comes down after 4 years of dominance with Sebastien Ogier, and even though the greater radical, 2017 Polo WRC filled with huge aero and widebody extensions is basically prepared to roll.
“Doing more isn’t necessarily better,” stated Maier. “Skoda has already been effective in WRC2.” He continued to quash any possibility that Skoda could adapt the Polo chassis for World RallyCross or Dakar competition.
The affable and passionate Maier was far keener to gaze to return of Skoda’s road cars, particularly its first electrified models.
“We may have our first plug-in hybrid in 2019, in the present Superb,” he confirmed. “We will also be carrying out a full EV – a bespoke vehicle – for China. And then, a complete EV throughout the planet. This belongs to our dedication to bring one cool product to promote each year.Inches
China’s showing more and more influential in Skoda’s carmaking. Maier told TopGear the next Skoda Yeti is going to be longer, wider and taller, and you’ll also have spin-off, lengthy-wheelbase version for that Chinese market.
The Kodiaq, meanwhile, will spawn a plug-in hybrid variant – something which its Nissan X-Trail and Hyundai Santa Fe rivals can’t match. Yet.
Why’s it taken Skoda before the finish from the decade to obtain stuck in to the plug-in game? “Skoda is a customers link to value”, the Chief executive officer explains. “We don’t have to bring technology right to market if our clients are not demanding it.
“There must be a maturity on the market as well as in the infrastructure – that will easily be better yet by 2019. Prices goes lower as electric mobility and infrastructure [grows] better. This really is a part of our technique for 2025.”
And just what for the future of vRS, which makes up about an enormous 20 percent of Octavia sales within the United kingdom, but presently features in not one other Skoda models? “A Kodiaq vRS is presently under evaluation”, teases Maier. “There needs to be a company situation, but [the accountants] are searching in internet marketing now and that i for just one really hope they think of a strong business case…”
