M3 to obtain DSG-style manual gear box
The brand new BMW M3 will receive a seven-speed double-clutch gear box instead of the conventional six-speed manual.
Official confirmation from the lengthy-rumoured transmission came using a document issued to BMW dealers confirming the car’s specs.
The brand new gear box, known as M DCT, is going to be offered by March 2008. Produced by BMW’s lengthy-standing transmission partner Getrag, it’ll provide rapid and nearly imperceptible shifts.
The rate of the double-clutch transmission will probably enhance the M3’s 4.8sec -62mph time by a few tenths of the second. The machine should offer considerably smoother shifts than BMW’s SMG transmission within the M5 and M6.
The transmission is going to be controlled by a mix of a shift lever, apt to be like the M5 and X5’s joystick control, and controls paddles.
The ‘box continues to be solely produced for BMW, and various versions are destined for that 3-series and also the 5-series.
Other available choices for that M3 (on purchase in September) include 19in alloy wheels and electronic damper control. The carbonfibre roof is going to be standard.
